PDF is a format, not an application
A PDF is a document file format. Adobe Acrobat is software for creating, viewing, editing and managing PDF files. They are closely connected historically, but they are not the same thing.

The problem PDF was created to solve

PostScript: the technology that made PDF possible
PDF did not appear from nowhere.

PostScript described how a page should be drawn: text, lines, shapes, images and other graphical elements could be expressed as instructions and rendered by a PostScript-capable printer.

What did the Camelot Project actually propose?
